German police arrested two terror suspects from a KLM Royal Dutch aircraft at Cologne airport Friday morning.

A 23-year-old Somali and a 24-year-old Mogadishu-born German citizen, both unarmed, were arrested on KLM's flight 1804 as it was getting ready for takeoff, said North Rhine-Westphalia state police spokesman Frank Scheulen, according to DPA news agency.

"They are suspected of wanting to join in jihad and of attempting to carry out possible attacks," Scheulen said. German police had been watching them for several months and found farewell letters left in their apartment referring to Holy War and possible terrorist attacks.

Flight 1804 was scheduled to depart at 7:05 a.m. (0605 GMT) for Amsterdam. The police action delayed take-off by 80 minutes.

A day before the arrests, German police appealed to the public to offer clues for two missing Islamists, a 21-year-old German called Eric Breininger and Houssain al Malla, a 23-year-old Lebanese. However, police said there was no connection between them and the two men arrested Friday.

On Sept. 19, two terror suspects were arrested near Frankfurt by German police on suspicion of links with plotting car bomb attacks in Germany last year.

Earlier this month, the head of the BKA Federal Criminal Office, Joerg Ziercke, warned that Germany is at high risk of attack from al-Qaida terrorists, according to Bloomberg.
